Safety & Risk Management

Real experience. Professional standards. Proven in the water.

At Noosa Surfing Academy, safety is built into everything we do.

Our approach is shaped by real-world lifeguarding experience and hands-on rescue situations.

Led by former professional lifeguard and experienced surf coach Dean Brady, our programs are delivered with a strong foundation in ocean safety, risk management and practical, in-water experience.

Qualified, Experienced & Proven

Dean Brady has extensive experience working in high-risk ocean environments, including professional lifeguarding across:

  • Noosa Main Beach

  • Noosa West Beach

  • Sunshine Beach

He holds all required Queensland lifeguard certifications, including:

  • Bronze Medallion

  • Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)

  • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques

  • First Aid and CPR

Real-World Rescue Experience

Dean has been involved in multiple rescues both on and off duty.

Notably, he successfully managed a serious spinal injury rescue at Noosa National Park, applying correct spinal handling techniques to ensure a safe outcome.

He has also assisted in multi-person rescue situations, including identifying and responding to swimmers caught in rip currents — demonstrating a proactive and highly aware approach to ocean safety.

Proactive Risk Management

Every session is carefully planned to minimise risk and maximise safety.

We:

  • Assess surf, tide and weather conditions daily

  • Select locations suited to each group’s ability

  • Adjust sessions based on changing conditions

  • Maintain clear communication with participants

Structured & Supervised Sessions

All lessons and programs are delivered using a structured approach that prioritises safety and learning.

  • Pre-session safety briefings

  • Clear expectations and guidance

  • Active supervision at all times

  • Small group sizes for close monitoring

Building Ocean Awareness

We believe safety starts with understanding the ocean.

Participants are taught:

  • Surf awareness and hazard identification

  • Rip current recognition

  • Surf etiquette and positioning

  • Respect for the ocean and other surfers
